Please note that I am not questioning the feature set of the OBP over
the PC BIOS. I'm just wondering how useful all those features are. The
systems that I've been exposed to are used to run applications within an
operating system. For these systems getting from power on to booting the
OS is about the extent of the OBP benefit. I would think that this
situation applies to the majority of systems.
Yes,
and that is exactly where I, with my system administrators hat on, am
interested in having OBP instead of a BIOS.
With OBP I can have the machine installed in its final rack location, have
the ethernets and the serial console connected, and than start installing
the OS.
On failure, I can switch of the machine using the lom, switch into
single mode, correct the problem and reboot the machine, all from my desk,
or on the weekend from my home office.
With OBP, I need a serial console switch port for 50 Euro for each machine.
With BIOS, I need a KVM switch port for at least 350 Euro for each machine,
plus an IP power switch for 50 Euro for each machine (100 Euro when using
redundant power supplies).
And this still gives a worse userinterface than the serial console.
