Hi DoN!
One other consideration -- I don't think that you can easily
move the drive from slot 1 to slot 0 after you have built the OS on it,
because the names of the mounted drive systems will change. So if you
want it to automatically boot from drive1 (instead of the default
drive0), you should use the eeprom(1) command to set the "boot-device"
entry to "drive1". It probably will look something like this:
boot-device=/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@0,0:a prod-disk prod-mirror
but "disk" is an alias for that long string, and the same as "disk0" on
this system, while "disk1" is an alias for the long string which really
references SCSI-ID 1. The above example is from an Ultra-60, which is
probably close enough to your machine to give an idea.
I want to thank you VERY MUCH for your kind assistance! Just having
people who have experience with things such as this offering little
tidbits can be a tremendous help to those of us who don't have much
experience with things such as this!
Well, I put the drive in my Sun computer tonight (Friday).
I seem to have some other, strange problem...
I no longer have my monitor. When I disconnect the cable, the
monitor says "No Signal, check the cable" on the screen. But, when I plug
it in, that message goes off, but nothing is on the monitor.
It was working when I shut the Linux system down. (The Linux system
is sitting on top of the Sun cabinet, so I have to shut down both systems
to get inside the Sun and place the new hard drive in.)
I might think it was the Matrox graphics card in my Linux system, but
it behaves EXACTLY the same way when plugged into the Sun computer.
(Currently, I have only one monitor. I normally don't have it plugged
into the Sun, because I normally log on to the Linux system, and network
connect to the Sun, and have one GNOME workspace totally dedicated to
mainly monitoring on the Sun.)
It's not the screen itself, because that "No Signal, check the cable"
comes on when I unplug the monitor cable from either the Linux or the Sun
monitor connection, as well as the extension cable that normally goes from
the Linux or Sun to the normal place on my desk where the monitor sits.
But, I believe both systems booted normally.
I connected the new hard drive in the Sun. I then booted the Sun up.
(Nothing came on the monitor, but I heard disk activity. After a couple
of minutes, everything seems normal on the Sun.)
I then booted the Linux. Again, I heard disk activity, and I am
using the Linux system right now, from a terminal. All seems normal. I
am getting new Internet email. Absolutely everything seems normal except
a monitor.
Tomorrow, I'll perhaps purchase a flat-panel monitor, which I've been
wanting to do, anyway, to have a second monitor, though the money right
now is really tight for this. If I purchase another monitor (my current
one is a CRT), I'll plug it in, and see if it works. That will tell me
for certain whether it is the CRT monitor.
(I have eight terminals on the Linux system, scattered throughout the
house. I have a Cyclades 16-port serial card connected to the Linux
system, with other serial devices attached, as well.)
So, all this new hard drive stuff is on hold, until I get this
monitor stuff figured out, as I can't see the Sun boot information
directly until it's fixed. (But, again, network connecting to the Sun
shows things evidently working completely normally. I just wanted to have
the monitor connected to the Sun and look at exactly what messages
appeared while it was booting, with the new hard drive.)
When I get back to Sun hard drive stuff, I'll begin to install
Solaris on the new drive, and work with things, such as the wonderful
information you have provided me.
Thank you again!
Barry
