I was just hoping to get some opinions on hardware. I've been told to
replace our three V880 (4 x 1200Mhz) servers.

They're just going to do a lot of pop and smtp mail traffic for tens
of thousands of users. They'll be sitting behind a load balancer.
Mailbox storage is on a netapp. LDAP is done on different servers.
They're really just going to be doing POP, MTA and LDA duties...

Just based on my own "research" (i.e. browsing sun store), I'm leaning
towards X4600's. They're good, fast boxes that look like they'll do
the job just beautifully. The CoolThreads technology sounds
promising, but the bottom line is they're only 1200Mhz processors,
regardless of how many threads it can handle. The Opterons are great
processors and the X4600 comes with up to eight 3Ghz processors.

Don't forget about power consumption. I would do the T2000 (or T1000)
try before you buy and evaluate it. Price/performance is outstanding.
One T2000 can probably replace your 3 V880 (based on CPU only) and
will save lots of $$$ in power. Of course you want at least 2 boxes.
