The answer to that is trivial: neither the processors nor the boards
they sit in are commodity items the way x86 systems are so the vast
economies of scale that drive the price down do not exist.

Of course, Sun could try to arrange such economies by priming the
market (and I guess they tried to do that at various points - I
remember things like Ultra 5s were not that uncompetitive with PCs at
the time), but there is only any point in doing that if there is a
potential market. So this comes down to my question again: why would
a general person *want* a SPARC workstation now? I suspect that the
answer is "they wouldn't, because Solaris/x86 does everything they
need".
