Hi again, DoN!
The connectors you indicated are EXACTLY what I see on the back of my
Ultra 30.
Is there a utility that is part of Solaris 8 that can do a thorough
diagnosis?
The Sun computer seems to be working regarding everything else - that
is used.
The only thing I had trouble with was the NFS server was down. But,
I'm pretty sure that was because of my temporary different network
configuration.
It actually was still up and used from Tuesday of last week (when I
got home from work and was greeted quickly by my mother whose face showed
a combination of relief [that I was home], fear, and exhastion) until late
last week, when I started getting some sort of internet connection back.
My cable modem was replaced Thursday afternoon. Friday evening, I
started getting my Linux internet port set up to talk to (what I now have
purchased a replacement for) the D-Link router/firewall. Ever since then,
when I connect an ethernet cable from the Linux port to the working Sun
network port, I get NFS server not up.
But, I have temporarily set my Linux port up on DHCP, where I have a
static IP address normally. Stuff like this made me understand why I was
having trouble. Unless I fully reconfigured my network the way it was
"pre lightning strike", I expect to have problems.
I don't have my normal email right now. The Sun system is my mail
host and a router for my Linux system. Since I can read my RoadRunner
email via their web page (though I sure prefer my own! :-D), I'm "making
do" this way until I get the Sun network port fixed. (All the Linux
sendmail does is send email to the Sun. The Sun's email knows that
"barry" or "ethel" [my mother] goes to the appropriate local mailbox.
And, the Sun sendmail can properly interpret internet email addresses,
where it's been sending them out hme0.)
(I was going to have internet by day, and just leave it on the Sun
overnight. I get from 4 to 6 emails a day, all overnight, that I sure
miss!! If my mail was working normally, mutt reading an NFS-mounted
partition physically on the Sun's hard drive, I would still get those
emails that I sure count on getting! But, in the [NO] time that I have, I
haven't yet figured out exactly what needs to be changed to allow a
relatively easy switch of cables -- the cable going to the router/cable
modem or the cable going to the Linux system.)
But, you're right. Replacing the whole system board would be the
thing to do if there is anything besides the ethernet port that is
damaged.
Thank you again for taking the time and initiative to help me!
Barry
