Remember that Google is your friend. In 30+ years of Unix, it's
unlikely that your problem is unique to you. Before you ask a question
on a newsgroup (or mailing list, forum, etc.) remember this and try to
search for the answer yourself. And never top post.

    But anyway, here's my list:

    -Books-
    The Tomes:
    Essential System Administration, Third Edition
Unix System Administration Handbook, Third Edition

    Very Good To Have:
Unix for the Impatient (if you are not an expert user, do yourself a
    favor and get this one.)
The Unix Programming Environment (good reference on philosophy)
    Learning Perl
    Sed & Awk
(or really a good sampling of ORA books)

When You Want To Learn How It All Works:
    Solaris Internals
The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System
    Lion's Commentary on Unix
Design of the Unix Operating System
    UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers
Understanding the Linux Kernel (2nd Edition probably)

    -Web Sites-
    http://linux.oreilly.com/
http://www.shelldorado.com/ (the only shell site you'll ever need)
http://groups.google.com/ (you could have got this answer here)
    http://www.google.com/ (or here)
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/
    http://toolbox.sgi.com/
    http://www.faqs.org/

Just another piece of advice: pick yourself up a used workstation off
eBay, like an Ultra 5 or Indigo2. If you want to shell out $1000, you
can get yourself a brand new Sun Blade 150 from http://store.sun.com.
This way you can tinker and practice without messing with production
    systems.

Alternatively, you could install xBSD, Linux, or Solaris x86 on an extra
x86 machine cheaply. I'd still get the workstation, but that's just me...
