We deal with all things Unix here, not just the versions of UNIX (R) (TM)
that have a particular stamp of whatever on them. Don't let the resident
troll make you think otherwise; it's about administering
"unix-based systems".

Well, it depends on what you're going to be running it on, and which
of them support your hardware. More and more, that doesn't matter much.
If you're just starting to get into all of this, a Redhat or Mandrake
Linux would be one gentle way to start, just don't get dependant on the
nice graphical configurators; learn what they're doing "under the covers".
Once you learn on one, add another, maybe one of the BSDs. The similarities,
and the differences, will be good for you to learn. Once you've learned
a couple of flavors, adding another becomes pretty trivial. Biggest
problem for me is remembering where various OS's keep the files, but
that's trivial.

A good admin can deal with any of them equally well. Go for the one that
runs the programs you want, maybe?

Hope this helps,
