The problem with OpenBSD and Slackware is that they are not
beginner-Unix operating systems. I'm not saying you shouldn't use
OpenBSD or Slackware (they're both rock-solid and high quality), but if
you want to learn, there are better places to start, including Red Hat
or Gentoo. FreeBSD is probably the best BSD to start with, since it is
the easiest of the 4 BSDs to install.

The OP may also want to try to wrangle a used Unix workstation (like a
Sun Ultra * or an Indigo2) off eBay.
