SysAdmin is an engineering profession. The idea that you can download
a copy, set up a box, and be an admin is a bit like thinking you can
download a bridge kit, install an exchange between 2 Interstate
highways, and be a civil engineer. It doesn't work that way. A real
program to learn SysAdmin takes years. Setting up a box is a most
excellent starting point sort of like a trip of a thousand miles
starts with one step, but it is only the beginning. In fact it is the
beginning of a grand adventure, so start today but also realize it's
not like becoming a waiter. Skilled labor jobs have apprenticeships
that take years to complete and the amount of skill needed to be an
SA is very large. If you can become a welder in a year, expect to
take several. And expect it to be worth it because you can work in
the field during that time and do worthwhile tasks.

In addition to practice setting up boxes, seek employment in the IT
department of some company and get an experienced SA to mentor you.
There is a mentoring program through SAGE so consider starting with
    them.
