I've been told that the NFS implementation in some releases of
HP/UX fails to interoperate properly with other systems where the
    username exceeds 8 characters.

There is evidence for the conjecture that Solaris, on its own,
is able to handle usernames up to 32 characters, except for a
few minor glitches that show up in utility programs, but Sun's
*support* commitment has been to support the POSIX standard,
which says that usernames are eight characters.

It's too late in the day for me to comment on what effect this
limit has on the marketability of Solaris and Sun products.
Readers could communicate their own thoughts on such matters
    to Sun sales representatives.
