1st: which bootloader you use ?
2nd: usually there are two options "normal" "fail-safe" for all common
new distribution (so i think better to have them both :))

3rd: RTFM for your specific bootloader and you will find that, there is
menu for this or some kind of "manual" actions

But there is no "General hints" it depend on your "unix" environment
and settings and also the distribution...etc.
4th: /boot (or your similar kernel folder) usually include the kernels
or alternative kernels to boot with
menu options during boot represent one kernel (if this is specified,
you can have more kernels without menu entry in bootloader.
