Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know exactly which rfc number it
is (or other standard) that describes this behaviour and states this
requirement ? Call me a fool, but I like to verify these kind of
things.

Does this also imply that the behaviour of an 'autonegotiate' switch
port is different from the behaviour of an 'autonegotiate' adapter,
and that therefore a solution like a "cross-link" cable (direct host
to host connection) for gigabit could never work ?
