Dumb TCPIP Communications Problem/Question

This is so frustrating!

My environment:
IBM 43P
Using onboard ethernet port
AIX 4.3.3
Link Integrity light is on on the hub
No DNS or DHCP - straight /etc/hosts file
The only AIX box in a room full of Windows 2000/XP machines (which can
ping each other, no problem - but not the AIX box).

Problem: I cannot ping any machines on my network from AIX, they
cannot ping me - by hostname or IP address.

What I have done so far:
Made sure ip address and subnet mask are correct (many times over now)
Tried assigning different IP addresses and hostnames (this was
successful, but still cannot ping)
I can ping myself and my loopback address.
Made sure DHCP client nor server is not running on AIX box.
Traceroute shows nothing as the packets do not appear to leaving the
box.
ifconfig -a shows the following:
et0: flags=e080863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,
RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST,GROUPRT,64BIT>
inet 192.168.0.222 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
Been through smit tcpip 100 times now.

Everything looks great to me - but no communications. This is a used
box that I have had for about a year now, but have never put on the
network.

There is a DIX/AUI port on the back as well. I assume it is not
activated because I am getting the link light on the hub from the TP
port.

Suggestions?????

Thanks!
