Why would you *want* to label a disk?

It may be similar to a virgin partition in Linux or Solaris --
say, as a range or set of ranges of blocks on a disk -- but
a logical volume can span physical volumes and be expanded
dynamically.
M> If so what do I need phys. partioning than for?
A physical partition is more or less just a set of disk blocks.
More than one logical partition can correspond to a physical
partition. A given physical partition in a mirrored logical
volume has *two* logical partitions, one in each mirror.
In the end, you'll be better off not trying to think of any LVM in
terms of the PC-like native disk subsystems of Solaris or Linux.
They ain't the same.

Nicholas
