4.3.3 to 5.1 Migration Upgrade AIX Troubles...

Hi All

We've been trying to upgrade our Unix machine (an IBM RS/6000 F50)
from AIX 4.3.3 to AIX 5.1. I think the trouble we're having is best
described in 3 sections, so here goes...

Problem 1

Each time we try and perform the "migration" upgrade to AIX 5.1 we get
*different* errors. Here is a selection of them:

a) "Cannot find the bos.rte pre-install script bos.rte_pre_i"
b) "fill_target_stanzas [62] - cannot execute"

The most common error we see repeatedly is this one:

"RPM Error Summary
The specified device /SPOT is not a valid device or file.
Basic operating system support could not be installed."

We've tried running fsck on our filesystems, we've allocated plenty of
space for AIX 5.1 and we've ensured we're using the correct
bosinst.data and image.data files.

Problem 2

Each time our AIX 5.1 upgrade fails, we restore the machine back to
normal using an mksysb backup tape we made before we began. Our most
recent upgrade attempt looked promising and lasted for 3 hours, but
eventually failed with this error:

"Data Storage Interrupt - PROC1 Creating boot image.
.ipcdget+000160 lwzx r0,r23,r24
KDB(0)>"

It seems that ever since we got this particular error, we've not been
able to restore from the mksysb tape anymore. Restoring our mksysb
now seems to consistently fail at 83% (when it says " mounting / ").
The machine totally freezes and the LCD display shows a flashing ‘888'
code (the full sequence is actually 888, 102, 700 then 0C5
repeatedly).

Problem 3

We performed a fresh clean installation of AIX 4.3.3, and then tried
to restore the mksysb backup tape from "Problem 2". The restore
appeared to work successfully, and we were able to log-on. However
hdisk1 (we have an hdisk0 and an hdisk1 forming a single volume group
called ‘rootvg') now had a PV STATE of "missing" instead of "active".

We performed a fresh clean installation of AIX 5.1. The PV STATE of
hdisk1 once again was ‘active'. We then tried to restore the mksysb
backup tape from "Problem 2" again. Although the restore finished
successfully, hdisk1 had a PV STATE of ‘missing' again!

At the moment, we're primarily facing "Problem 2" because we can't
restore our mksysb backup without first doing a fresh clean install of
4.3.3 or 5.1 first. If we can solve this, then we'll be facing
"Problem 3". Ultimately, we're going to need to get round "Problem 1"
somehow, after we've solved Problems 2 and 3!!

Any help anyone can provide on these three problems would be greatly,
greatly appreciated. As you can tell, we're certainly in a total
muddle right now.

Thanks

Daniel
