Hallo Nigel,

a quick search through comp.unix.aix for "man +page +4.3" will return 719
posts of which not all but quite a considerable number will deal with this
4.3.0+ standard problem "Where are the man pages?" Your post will probably
be found at place fivehundred-something and therefore it won't be read by
anybody because as you know it's only page one google returns that counts
;-). That is why I think it does make sense to keep the number of threads
small and not starting new threads with the same question over and over
again.
Secondly nobody will hold you back on posting the fivehundred something
answer to this question if you can spare the time but it is unlikely that
this will result in anything rewarding. It is more likely that the question
poster will then ask more questions that have been answered a hundred times
before because there is no need to search the group first. Why should he?
There will always be somebody who will spare him from the need to type three
words into the search field, press the enter button and look through the
resulting output. These people can become real timesinks. You will find out
yourself, when you stay as an active member with the group.
Thirdly I do not think that the 'information' you gave on where to find the
man pages is really helpful. You are right, the man pages are not on the
install CD but it is very likely that the original poster did already find
out himself. They aren't even on the installation media 2-4. And if the
original poster searches all the other CDs that came with AIX 4.3.3 he will
find that there isn't any lppset named "man or page or manpage or man page".
Your hint "do a SMITTY INSTALL and look for the man entries" is therefore
completely useless as the word 'man and/or page' does not appear at all.
That's why this question comes up again and again. So you just spread some
fog over the "Where are the man pages" threads in this list. Well, at least
they won't be able to sue you for giving away this biggest IBM secret of all
;-) but when posting at all you might be more concerned about content than
about the number of postings.

Regards
Andreas
