A follow-up to my own posting, in case anyone else has the problem.

A bit of searching revealed people had had problems with DNS when they
went to 5.2 - and it was the problem here. Don't know whether
something gets missed out on the upgrade or a default is the other way
around but in this case that had DNS checking on, and our IP not in
the hosts file. And their ftp client took the same settings, so every
request of ours was causing a call onto the 'net before being
actioned.

Add our address, change the setting so hosts is checked before DNS,
and we're running again.
