What was the problem with a preservation install? Did it complain about
a size problem with the boot area?

Sometimes, when you lose a disk block right in the boot area, it is then
too small for even a preservation install. Full install works like a
champ. Just went thru this myself, except that the problem occurred
just as I was going to install ML4.
