I have a 43P-260 test machine running 5.2 and as it happens I switched it
to the 64 bit kernel today, having installed it with 32 bit. No problem,
although I do not think the firmware has been updated since it was
purchased in about 1999. It's SPX99027.
This is quite a slow machine - slow enough that mine has been retired
from active service so I rescued it for testing. It does stay with the
screen showing "starting software" for quite a while with no other output.
It was about 5-10 minutes I think. I didn't bother to watch the LEDs but
the disk light was flashing on and off throughout. I think it was faster
with the 32 bit kernel but I won't swear to it. I'd expect 64 bit to be
slower than 32 on a machine like this, with little memory (I have
256MB) and all the pointers doubling in size. I only put the 64 bit kernel
in so I could compile a 64 bit lsof on it, for the benefit of some much
larger production machines without compilers.
How long did you leave yours? Also, are you using a graphical console? I
am not, and they can slow things down, especially if memory is tight.
Regards, Ian
