Unfortunately, the error report (errpt -a) would have probably given
you the most information about why the system went down. Often if it is
something as simple as a power failure at your offices, the errpt will
show POWERFAIL messages.
If you check the root mail, is there any messages from around that
time? The exact time it came back up would show in last or "uptime".
Our applications on the RS/6000 are designed to create entries in a log
to let us know what people are doing on the system, such as if someone
tries to initiate a shutdown.
My thought on your situation is that one of the folllowing occurred:
1) Power failure: Make sure that you have a battery backup (UPS) unit
for the system to avoid minor power outages by your electric company
and have it checked/tested once a year.
2) System crash: Normally a crash would produce a dump. If your
sysdumpdev area is clear of any new dump info, then this probably did
not cause the reboot.
3) User-initiated shutdown: If a user shut it down, then they had to
have permission to do so (permission as in access to the "shutdown"
command). Either you have too many people with root access or you need
to set up an alias to point shutdown to a logging program to track
shutdown requests.
There are other issues but these are probably the most common.
