Maybe you won't loose the warranty on the machine, but i'm pretty
sure IBM did put something into the support contract papers that
covers the use of 3rd party hardware. Thats pretty standard Cisco
does it, Sun does it and everyone else probably too. So when you
call your favorite 1-800-my-machine-is-acting-weird at IBM and
they dig through your snap and discover signs of unsupported 3rd
party hardware, you'll probably get a nice bill for their effort.
I'd only suggest low priced parts for testing environments. It
works pretty good with my RS6000, Sun and Cisco gear. For pre-
production and production systems it's definately a no-go - not
worth the hassle. If your shop has trouble financing quality parts,
alarm bells should ring, because that's just the beginning of a
nice ride downhill.
