Bulk erasure of old backup tapes?

Other than using a tape drive to write/erase each old tape of hundreds
that are to be discarded, can anyone recommend a quick and easy method
to render the backup tapes reliably unreadable allowing them to be
discarded?
Please advise?
Thanks
