can't log in

We have a 44P model 170 running AIX 4.3.3 which has suddenly decided
to not allow users to login. At boot time, it gives two different
errors which may or may not be related to the problem at hand:
"srcmaster is not accepting connections" and "the System Resource
Controller is having socket problems". There are no error codes
displayed on the front-panel LCD.
When the system boots, it gives a normal CDE login screen, but
hangs after the root username and password are entered. The
"failsafe session" and command-line login options aren't useful
either (the command-line login hangs after the password entry, then
times out and reverts to the CDE login screen).
Thoughts? What else can I try? This machine was working perfectly
well up until recently, when we had to shut it down for a building-wide
power outage (yes, I shut it down properly).
I tried to boot into single-user mode by power-cycling the machine and
hitting F5 after the first beep, but it didn't seem to work and the
machine continued booting normally. Is there a different method to
boot this model into single-user mode?
Thanks for any suggestions.
