I should have mentioned that the data we are backing up contains a mix
of ISAM files and ascii text files, as well as a few binaries (cobol
programs and runtimes).

I had suggested to our internal staff to find out how much space the
file systems take up on the RS/6000, then find out how much the backup
uses (in blocks) when written to the tape and compare the two, but was
not sure about the differences in software compression, hardware
compression, tape block size, cpio block size, and the like.

In the end, I suggested they just do a test run of what they want to
back up and see if it fits, but that does not really answer their
question of how much space is left and can we add more without going
over...
