I came accross a J30 RS6000 system for $60 the other day. I got it all
running after aobut 12 hours of reading through System Operator's
manual/Repair.
I have just about everything working, except ethernet. I have the old
AUI/BNC card in this, and I have a 10BaseT Transceiver hooked up to it,
which goes to my router. When I go into smitty, it shows eth0, and
typing :
"lscfg -vl ent0"
shows the following:
ent0 00-01 Ethernet High-Performance LAN
Adapter (8ef5)
ROS Level and ID............0015
Displayable Message.........802.3/ETHERNET
Part Number.................000G3369
EC Level....................C73859
Device Driver Level.........01
Diagnostic Level............01
FRU Number..................000G3368
Manufacturer................204491
When I type ifconfig ent0 up it replies with:
"0821-515 ifconfig: error loading /usr/lib/drivers/if_ent: A file or
directory in the path name does not exitst."
But this device shows up under smitty as ent0, I am confused here (I am
used to linux, not AIX at all. Can anyone provide me some help? I am
simply trying to assign the ent0 interface an address, gateway, and
subnet mask, so that I can connect to my home router.
Thanks!

select 'ent0'
You should see a field to choose between
the AUI and BNC cable types.
The "lsattr -E -l ent0" command will also show this field.
Some BNC/AUI cards have a jumper on the card itself.
I think the J30 card used the s/w setting, not a jumper.

select 'en0' ('en0' is the tcp/ip interface on the 'ent0' adapter)
fill in the fields for your network.
You probably do NOT want to do anything with 'et0'
which is the 802.3 ethernet tcp/ip network interface
on the 'ent0' adapter.
The "lsattr -E -l en0" and "lsattr -E -l inet0" commands
will show most of the values from that smit panel.
The "lsdev -C" command should indicate the relationship
between the 'en0' network interface and the 'ent0' adapter.
