Re: RS6000 43p/140 AIX 4.3 new install - get stuck!

I'll most likely have a number of questions throughout next few
weeks... I do want to get a video card (and one of the tablets that
hook up to this?) to get X installed and running. I may also track
down a processor upgrade kit. I'd love to get as much juice out of
this thing as I can. But I may end up opting for another (newer) RS6k
and using this as a terminal server.

I'd recommend the Type 1-N GXT255P FRU 93H6267 video adapter for your
43P, it was a favorite for many 7043 users, as it offered pretty good
performance at a "reasonable" price. If you plan to do a serious
amount of X-based work, you'll be much happier with the 1-N than one of
the "entry-level" video adapters like the 1-T (GXT130P) or 1-U
(GXT300P), but the latter will probably sell for much less on eBay.

I don't see your processor speed listed - it should be one of 166, 200,
233 or 332 MHz, with the 233MHz speed probably being the most common.
The 332MHz upgrade kit is rather "rare", it became available late in
the life cycle of the 43P. If you want a significantly faster machine,
you might want to consider a later vintage 7025-F50 with quad 332MHz
processors, that will also give you the option of up to 18 internally
mounted hard drives in hot-swap trays (all SSA or a mix of SCSI and
SSA).

AIX is not a "memory pig", you could probably run a reasonable mix of
applications under AIX 4.3.3 with 128MB of RAM -- many people have done
so successfully in the past. To be on the safe side, I'd recommend
256MB, but if you can find 6 128MB sticks at a good price, go for it.
The DIMMs you want are FRU 93H6823.
