we have a client with an ancient rs6000 with AIX 4.3 and he has some

the disks are scsi. 2 failing disks... hdisk 1 & hdisk4. Also, it

mirrored copies are corrupted.
so...
can't use migratepv...
but...
there is a good copy of the data on tape.
basically, both of the failing disks were for a VG called vg01.
I've never worked with AIX 4.3 before, and I have done some research,
on several IBM websites, including pSeries InfoCenter, etc... but have
not yet found a method for replacing the failed disks using tape
backup instead of mirrored copies. is it as simple as:
1)bring down the system
2)replace the failing disks
3)bring up the system and do a cfgmgr to recognize the new drives
4)do a restvg from tape to restore the volume groups
???
from my previous experience with AIX 5.x, I am assuming that it it NOT
that simple, that there is probably much more to it, but there seems
to be a lack of good AIX 4.3 documentation that describes the correct
method for this situation.
Anybody done this before, or have anything to offer?
thanks in advance,

That sounds about right, not that I've actually had to do this.
I recommend that you rmove the hdisk definitions before adding the new
disks so thet they are allocated the old numbers, although this may
only be an issue with SSA enclosures (which is what I'm used to) where
the hdisk number allocation seems to be done based on the disk serial
number order (ignoring the first two characters). If you really want
the new hdisk1 to be in the slot that the old one was in boot with it
present, then shutdown and add hdisk4 and boot again. (If they are
hot swappable you can simply add the disk and run cfgmgr.) Also check
if the disks have pdisk numbers too and delet those along with the
hdisk numbers, but be careful: hdisk1 may be pdisk0, etc.
It sounds (from "man restvg") like restvg requires the disks not to
belong to a volume group, which is good if they were in a volume group
of their own. If they share a volume group with other disks you may
have to delete the whole volume group to restore it from tape, or
perhaps by specifying hdisk1 and hdisk4 it will leave the rest of the
volume group alone...
Hope you get some clearer advice!
Jeffrey
