If you mean that long period where it keeps looking for network files
when there is nothing in the NVRAM, then eventually (5 minutes?) it will
come back and let you in the console.

I vaguely recall you can interrupt the boot really early on, and turn it
off. But my next step would be to go commune with www.cisco.com and
find it. Since I know how much time it usually takes me to find
something there, I'll leave that to you or some other reader who has it
fresh in their head.

You could also set up the server(s) and files it's looking for with
minimal config files.

Note I've mostly worked with 4x00 and 37x5, and don't know if the 1601
is significantly different.
