My boot process stops to have a good long think when it gets to the
starting sshd or starting sendmail process.
The book I cling to (FreeBSD Unleashed, Second Edition) informs me that
this is because FreeBSD is trying to work out my machine's hostname, and
its querying all the nameservers in resolv.conf to see if they know the
answer.
The book does not offer me a solution, because I am using an ADSL
switch/router/modem that does not seem to offer a here-is-your-name
service to my FreeBSD box.
So, two questions:
1) Where do I want to look in the handbook (or in my book) to help
FreeBSD answer this query?
2) Could this problem be the reason that cvsup takes a seemingly long
time to start each download? (Once downloads start, I get the searing
speeds of ADSL, but the process seems to stop dead for a fair while
before a download begins each time.) Is this FreeBSD trying to get the
machine name every time and getting nothing but timeouts for its trouble?
