Yes -- less than optimum dns configuration defenitely does the trick.
I have a good enough reason to run delibrately misconfigured domain
(in the internal network) and alas sendmail takes ages to start.
would I use hostname.domainname pair sendmail would start ok.
(tried and tested)

On the other hand. When dealing with network anything ffron slow dns
response, faulty network component or misconfigured interface has the
same symptoms.
