I've used the Maxtor 40G external USB drive with FreeBSD. It works.
That was with 4.7/4.8, so it only went at USB 1.0 rates, which are not
fast. On a USB 2.0 computer with software running it at 2.0 rates, it
was fine, not noticeably different than IDE.
