19.5 hours to build KDE... kernel at fault?

The last time I built KDE it took between 10 and 17 hours. (I was out
when it finished.)
This time it has taken 19.5 hours. This is alarming because I built and
installed a custom kernel, thinking this would speed things up. Worse
still, now that KDE has finally built, I'm getting all sorts of
exotic-sounding errors from the KDE init process, and KDE keeps either
freezing, or dropping back to the console, sometimes complaining of
signal 11 errors, other times moaning about the file table being full
(unable to create I/O slave: too many open files).
Is this likely to be my custom kernel, or is something more serious
going on?
My custom kernel is basically just every device commented out unless it
was already detected and present in dmesg. Except scbus and da, which
were needed by a couple of other devices.
I also specified 686 as my CPU type (I'm using a Celeron), and maxusers
of 6, because I'm the only one using my machine.
Have I done something stupid?
