Obviously you either have no idea about what are you doing or you are
not the responsible network/ sysadmin or both.
Before starting doing anything check with your network admin if there is
physical segment separation of these subnets, restrictions etc. Than ask
the network admin to setup proper routing from and to the desired
subnet. Ask also if there are trafic restrictions implemented. Once done
you should be able to setup Samba or FTP server (depends on what is
permitted, or if network admin got laid yesterday) and be on your way.
Obviously this is for a couple of users so you do not want to create a
huge project out of this. Secondly, it appears from your question that
you cannot talk to these machines today, therefore authentication most
likely will be local to 192.168.1.1. Presumably Clients of your fellow
students are Window machines. Once above is done, instruct them to right
click "my network places" and select "search for computers". Enter
192.168.1.1 to the search field. This is my best guess answer based on
limited information in your question.
If there is no physical segment separation figure ask for IP address
within the range of clients that you wish to share your files with and
give your machine proper subnet mask.
Do not try to setup any network services server without authorization
otherwise any even most reasonable network/ sysadmin will give you well
deserved ass kicking.
If you are the network admin ask god in at least an hour of sincere
prayer how the hell you got this job than make a drawing of what you are
trying to achieve and think about it. Us useless bastards call it
generating requirements specifications.
(confused) //if you are only allowing trafic only from the ranges of the
campus, and clients are outside of this range than there is no way in
hell you can make this work until you allow trafic from and to these
clients...or I may be mistaken?
It is obviously unclear what the actual requirements are but WINS
server....where do you guys find those dealers?
