Especially if you already have the SCSI disks you can find
an SCSI raid controller apt to do RAID5 for a moderate amount of money,
and you save yourself all the troubles which may come from the OS,
whatever the OS is. You are guaranteed you can run FreeBSD-4, FreeBSD-5,
Linux, Windows, whatever, without trouble. You know you can boot on the
raid device, you can swap on it, etc. At present you cannot even swap on
a vinum device in FreeBSD-5 because of incompatibilities with GEOM. Who
will cure these problems, who will geomify vinum, apply fine grained
locking to it etc. One thing you can be sure is that phk will *not* do
it, since he has publicly stated he doesn't want to. Moreover Raid5 has
always caused performance problems, and even stability problems. Done in
hardware you can expect it performs up to the specs. I have read a
comment recently by some freebsd developer (sos?) saying that the vinum
perfs were "abysmal" (his own wording) in his tests.
