FreeBSD 4.9/Novell Netware 6.5 mount problem. . .

Howdy,
We have two main servers at work. I maintain the FreeBSD 4.9 server, the other
IT guy maintains the Netware server. Among other things, we use the FreeBSD
machine as a web server for some internal documents, which are actually on the
Netware machine. We mount the appropriate directory from the Netware machine on
the FreeBSD machine using mount_nwfs, and all [usually] goes well.
Sometimes [not always predictable], the mount 'disappears'--the mountpoint
[obviously] is still there, 'df -h' reports the correct information, but folks
don't get any information when they try to connect. When I connect to the
FreeBSD machine, and try to list the directory contents, I get an error [can't
reproduce the error right now, as the machines are behaving nicely] and no
directory contents.
However, if I continue to type in 'ls', eventually, the directory contents will
list, and everything is back to normal.
The other IT guy has looked high and low, and can't find a bug report for Novell
that indicates this problem. It seems to me that the other machine is 'dropping
the link', and it isn't being refreshed until someone [me] comes along and bangs
on the door [using 'ls] persistantly to wake things up.
The other IT guy and I work well together, so this isn't a finger pointing
thing--we would just like this little annoyance to go away.
On the Novell side, the user that logs in for the mount has unlimited time
priviledges on the Novell machine, so it isn't that.
Any suggestions or tests we could run to get to the bottom of this? Thanks!
