I am running 4-STABLE on a Compaq Armada e500. I have X (Gnome),
openoffice, evolution, mozilla etc. The onboard LAN and modem
connections work fine, as does a Netgear 802.11 WiFi card. The ACPI
support is fine (battery status report is accurate), and the machine
goes in and out of standby without problems. I also use USB memory
sticks work without any major hiccups...

I think a lot will depend on the manufacturer - my Compaq seems to be
well supported under FBSD. You may fare better or worse - it may be worth doing
some more research first...
