Read the various documentation that comes with or relates to the FreeBSD
release mechanism. Basically, you build a world in /usr/src, then cd
release and make release. The snag is that you need a reasonably sized
mount to put the result in, and to pass quite a few variables. Also, as
shipped it'll create a build directory from the freshly made world, then
cvs checkout the release you wanted and build that from scratch again.
If you don't want that, there's a patch available to skip that, on the web.
The ports mechanism is a bit different and I haven't looked at it yet.
