/usr/ports/INDEX says "** No Description" for everything!

Anybody else have this problem? After using cvsup for a year without
subsequently learning how to actually rebuild the INDEX file in
/usr/ports, a nice fellow taught me how to use "portsdb -uU" to
recreate it. Unfortunately, now when I do my typical...

grep -i "^appname" /usr/ports/INDEX | awk -F\| '{print($1" "$2"
"$4);}' | sort -u

...the third column of my output (that's the "$4", the description
field in the INDEX file) now consistently says "** No Description"
instead of the usual informative piece.

Did I miss anything? Should I be typing something slightly different
than "portsdb -uU"?

Thanks in advance,
