problem installing to Compaq Presario R3000Z

 Using the 4.9 boot CD. The kernel decompresses. I get the countdown to
loading the kernel. Then the laptop just powers down. I thought to try
disabling the APM features but the bios settings are very minimal. No
options for APM at all. This same machine will boot to a Knoppix Linux CD
and run fine.

 Any ideas?
