First, I apologize if the topic has been beat to death. I've been
away from Usenet for a long time and, so, am not up on what's been
happening. To that same end, I shall very much appreciate if any
responses can be Cc:ed to crs@swcp.com (or just reply to sender to
this message if you think the info is not of general interest).

I live in a small rural village and, believe it or not, DSL is
coming to may area! Now all I must do is get it, get it working,
etc.

I've done some web searches and, so far, everything I've seen is
about using pppoe. Is that really necessary? Can I not simply
plug a cable from an ethernet card on my system to an ethernet port
on the DSL "modem"? Quite a few years ago, I built a (very) small
network of Sun work stations doing essentially just that. That
was, of course, thin ethernet. Later a hub was installed and
everything went to that but that's another story.

If you have the time, comments about connecting a single freeBSD
(3.4 to be precise--don't ask...) system as a start. Later, I'll
be interested in networking my daughters microsoft box to also use
it but one thing at a time....

Can you also explain the reason for the (apparent) widespread use
of pppoe with DSL? The more I understand, the fewer questions I'll
need to ask later....

Many thanks for any help and

Kindest regards,

Charlie
