I have one of these units, and "it just works".
1. Boot Windows for config purposes. Plug the Windows box and the PS101s
into a single switch and turn off any windows software firewalls you might
have. An unmanaged switch may be preferable so that you know that no
filtering is happening (or you could just use a crossover cable). So, now
all external variables are eliminated...
2. Run the IPSetup utility that comes with the unit. Type in the unit ID
number off the label (this generates a MAC address for the IPSetup utility
to talk to), then set the static IP parameters. You might then need to
power-cycle the widget to make it respond to the new IP address. It will
then respond to pings.
3. Run the Netgear Admim program to set up lpd and Samba printing etc.
Only annoyances I had were that Appletalk, FTP and TELNET cannot be
disabled. Mildly irritating but harmless really. The unit itself is solid,
and I don't recall it ever crashing.
If the IPsetup program still doesn't work for you, you might want to fire up
Ethereal and see what gets sent. My money's on one of:
- a Windows S/W firewall;
- some network infrastructure dropping IPsetup's MAC frames because it
doesn't understand them;
- being on the wrong site of a router or L3 VLAN switch at the time you
tried the config.
