As all I wanted was to authenticate against the system password, I ended
up using mod_pwcheck which worked great and has been ported for apache2
too... (it's not in the FreeBSD port collection though)

Don't worry about jpd post, lately (that is for the past year) all he's
been able to post is stuff like "you idiot, read the manual it's damn
simple"
