...
# So what I am saying is that there are other manufacturers with these
# Radeon 7000 or Radeon 9200 DVI cards. They are relatively cheap nowadays.
#
# Now, about 1600x1200 DVI. AFAIK the card I have can do this, BUT ...
# I have never tried it. I am planning to buy a 19" LCD, but still trying
# to select the make and model to go for. So far I only used my old NEC
# 19" CRT. That works fine with this card under 1600x1200, but that is not
# DVI.
In the meantime I got a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis and everything
works OK at 1600x1200@DVI. One thing I had to do, though, was to disable
(via jumper) the on-board ATI Rage on my Supermicro serverboard. Yes, I
have read xorg.conf(5) top to bottom and seen the section where it says
that I have to specify BusIDs if there is more than of graphics adapter
in a system. But the problem was not associating devices and monitors,
but combining memory ranges. With both adapters accessible I would
always get this in the Xorg.log:
$ egrep '^.(EE|WW)' Xorg.0.log
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:4:9:0) found
(WW) ****INVALID MEM ALLOCATION**** b: 0xb0000000 e: 0xbfffffff correcting
(EE) Cannot find a replacement memory range
which had the effect of leaving pure random dots for all images and
rendered fonts (while a plain xterm would look ok).

Jens
