This does not exactly answer your question, but I always use:

X -configure

to generate an XF86Config (or an xorg.conf) and then modify
it with a text editor --- need to change the mouse device
to /dev/psm0 (or /dev/ums0 for a usb mouse), choose your
DefaultDepth and add modes. Sometimes need to adjust the
Sync rates for the monitor too.... It took me a few tries
to figure all this out, but it always works.

If you can't get xorgcfg working, post the output from
X -configure and we can probably get you going.
