The BIOS "keyboard num lock" forces the keypad to be on.

Why would I NOT want to use it? I make sure mine is OFF.

I have a very compact keyboard with no keypad - and if you press
numlock the 789 keys work as normal, UIO become 456, JKL
map to 123 and m ">" and "/" map to 0 "." and "/" .

Numlock gives the effect of a numeric keyboard for people that use
them but I've always touched typed on the number keys above the
standard keys and never saw a need to take my hands from the home
row to move to the keypad.

BTW - this keyboard with no number-pad is one of the best I've used
for touch typing and I'm faster with it than the spongy $10 keyboard
[or cheaper] that are distributed with most machines today.

It has a great feel. And in a pinch I could use it as a weapon
as it comes in about 3-4 pounds. Has metal parts and the
leters IBM in the upper corner. It's only drawback is that
it has the typical audible key sound typical of the classic IMB
keyboards.

I just turned it over at it was made on February 19, 1993.

Since I work almost exclusively in an 80x24 green type on black
backgroun in standar text mode [vision problems] this keyboard
works very will for me.

I hope that answers your question.
