Use cron to keep your ports tree updated, then use portupgrade -RfaP
That recursively builds up the tree (applications on which the
application being upgraded depends), forces the upgrade, upgrades
everything, and will try to use packages where they're available.
Be warned, though, using portupgrade without first reading
/usr/ports/UPDATING can result in all kinds of nasty things happening.
