I have not yet found the time to install FreeBSD but I think I will have a
free weekend at the end of this month.
I find this discussion fascinating as I had thought that FreeBSD was
competitive to a Linux desktop environment... with all of the 3rd party
'goodies'... sound, Flash, Acrobat plugin, etc. I had no idea that FreeBSD
was (way?) behind the curve of Linux.
If it is (and I don't know... except from what I read here) it looks like
two of the forks, PC-BSD and DesktopBSD might make up for it. I don't know
one from the other but IF (and like I say, I don't know jack!) either of
these can fill the 'desktop void' (assuming there is one!) you might be
looking at a re-play of the Debain vs. Ubuntu/Mepis/Kanotix 'hostility'
that is happening over in the Linux neck of the woods.
I will say one thing. Even IF FreeBSD can do all the desktop 'magic', most
folks don't want to work hard getting it configured. We can do that with
Slackware in Linux if we want to. We don't need FreeBSD to give us an
ulcer. Slackware (or Gentoo) will do it just fine, thank you!
I'm looking forward to installing one of the BSD products (Free, Desktop, or
PC) and maybe doing an article sort of like what I did this week for
NewsForge (which owns Linux.com):
http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=05/08/31/1533252
You could almost classify BSD as a 'small distro.'
Interesting thread. I hope it continues (and stays civil.)
