The point is that FreeBSD could potentially benefit tremendously from a
formal connection with either PC-BSD or Desktop BSD - FreeBSD would
continue to develop in an uncompromised & uncontaminated (from the
standpoint of the people working on it) way, whilst the PC-BSD/Desktop
BSD project would continue to develop in a 'user-friendly' way, to
bring in swathes of newcomers. These new users would increase interest
in and support/development of FreeBSD itself, (as these projects are
based on FreeBSD code, and hence directly benefit from FreeBSD
development) which would in turn help to make PC-BSD/Desktop BSD better
(as these projects are based on FreeBSD code...).
So a kind of virtuous circle could potentially come into being. In any
case, it at least seems clear that FreeBSD has a lot to gain from
supporting these 'user-friendly' desktop projects.
