I agree with you. I like dpkg-reconfigure very much, though, and am
not 100% sure if there is something equivalent on FreeBSD. Anyway I
don't mind configuring by editing files, I think it's the best way,
which I also enjoy.

I also like FreeBSD better (I'm using it already for about 1 year
while I'm using Debian since 1994 or so). But I still run Debian sarge
in some boxes (the most critical servers and other's workstations)
because I am 100% sure I'll be able to upgrade from one version to the
next (I am actually upgrading several boxes for a few years already)
whithout a hitch. I really like apt, and apt-get dist-upgrade does a
wonderful job. Perhaps when I'm more familiar with upgrading FreeBSD
from one version to the next one I find it confortable enough to "risk"
doing it on other people workstations and critical servers.

I have read the Handbook and the FAQ several times (I really enjoy
reading documentation). I have also seen many questions and answers
about upgrading (mainly about whether or not one should upgrade or do a
fresh instalation of the new release) and I am not still sure I
understand the upgrade proccess and whether one should really do a
fresh instalation everytime.

I don't mind doing a fresh install on my workstations and servers,
since I user pretty easy setups (a few console applications, X with
Ion window manager, Firefox ---of course I don't want Flash, Java, or
any similar disgusting stuff--- are enough for my workstations).

So, my point is: could someone point me to the right place to get to
fully understand the upgrade procedure for FreeBSD? (I don't mind
reading technical stuff, I rather enjoy doing it). I really need to
get to know it and to understand whether or not a complete successful
and quick upgrade between versions is already/will be any time soon
possible.

Thank you!
