Good Afternoon Everyone,
I plan to replace sendmail on my home server with postfix.
I looked around a bit on how to do it, and even found a nice thread here
with the subject "How no to start sendmail" which obviously evolved way
over that topic. Still, I am not confident on the way to go.
*FACTS* :
- I plan to do a buildworld anyway, so doing that with NO_SENDMAIL
shouldn't be a problem. I am happy to do that if that is required.
- I am not one of the maniacs who really wants to remove every single
bit of sendmail. I do want to remove it, but the only idea behind that
is because if it is not in use and not required then why should it be
there. (takes space, may lead to confusion, etc)
- Postfix should cover everything that sendmail used to do (even more).
System messages like those from periodic, mails between local users,
e-mails between hosts whithin the private network, e-mails outgoing to
the internet (and later when I set up an MX record, even e-mails
incoming from the internet).
- Just for reference, I plan to add an IMAP server (possibly courier),
some sort of SPAM and VIRUS filtering, fetching some remote POP accounts
via fetchmail, and some sort of webmail (maybe squirrel) later.
So, for any of these, do I need to keep any part of sendmail?
Well, I don't even know for sure that sendmail can be removed entirely.
What would be the recommended way to go about this replacement?
Is there a howto on this?
I am not intended to start another crusade here, like the one that
emerged from the other post I mentioned earlier. I am merely trying to
collect suggestions, recommended ways, methods from the community on
what would be the best way to replace sendmail with postfix.
Regards,
Keve
